The Kelstone® is a extraordinary new musical instrument with 18 strings, designed by Jan Van Kelst.
The essence of the instrument is that the hand is not around an arm or neck like on a guitar, violin, cello or most other stringed instruments. The hand is on top of the instrument which gives it a greater freedom of movement and expression. The footpedal lets you control the dynamics of the play.
You can play single Kelstone® or double Kelstone®, which although physically the same instruments, demand another approach and technique. It’s like two-hand-tapping or tapping with two hands, according to Van Kelst. Several unique video demos are provided on the Kelstone website.
With the Kelstone you can hammer-on and pull-off, strum and tap, slide and bend, fingerpick and bottleneck, slap and scratch and play percussion.
The Kelstone is an instrument that should appeal to both guitar and bass players as well as keyboard players, for any kind of music, for soloists, arrangers, composers and accompanists, innovators and traditionalists. The design of the Kelstone allows you to start with one instrument and then later attach second arm on the stand to make it a double Kelstone.
